There are a lot of questions surrounding the tattoo removal procedure. Does tattoo removal hurt? How does laser tattoo removal work? Are there other tattoo removal methods? How many laser tattoo removal sessions are required to remove a tattoo completely? Tattoo removal lasers are designed to target and quickly destroy tattoo pigment with different laser wavelengths. These wavelengths break apart the tattoo into ink particles, allowing the body’s immune system to remove the ink from the area. There are two ways the body removes tattoo ink. It is most frequently absorbed and flushed out of the body via the immune system, but it can, in rare cases, be forced out of the pores. When absorbed, the treated area will typically almost immediately appear lighter in color. When expelled, the tattoo can actually begin to appear darker. Neither is something to worry about! As treatments continue, the tattoo will become less and less visible. Most tattoos require anywhere between 3 and 8 sessions to remove the ink completely. The PicoSure laser treats and targets more colors on more skin types than any other tattoo removal method on the market today, in less sessions than a tradition laser. It is considered the gold standard of tattoo removal.
Tattoo Removal is not the most pleasant of procedures, but it is tolerable, especially considering the pain associated with getting the tattoo in the first place. How uncomfortable the procedure is depends on the location of the tattoo being removed and the individual person getting the laser treatment. Just like when getting a tattoo, fatty areas are generally less painful than bony regions. The treatment discomfort ranges from sunburn-like in discomfort to as uncomfortable as getting the tattoo initially. The good news is that the tattoo removal process is much faster than getting the initial tattoo. Most tattoo removal sessions take only 1-5 minutes to complete. Of course, this time estimation varies with the size of the tattoo. In general, tattoos take as long to remove as it would take for you to cover them with a marker.

Before the procedure, there is nothing you need to do to prepare. However, at Encore Medical Rejuvenation, we recommend staying out of the sun before and after the procedure. Blisters are a potential body response to the laser, especially in already damaged skin, so you should avoid sun exposure throughout the tattoo removal process.
After the tattoo removal procedure, clients can expect redness, swelling, small blisters, and slight itchiness. It is very important not to scratch the treated area as this can increase the chances of scarring. Additionally, do not submerge the area in water as it is healing. Aftercare instructions will be provided and, for the best results, follow them thoroughly. If you must go in the sun, cover the area being treated.
Any swelling and redness should subside dramatically within two weeks, but it is not recommended to continue treatments until directed. The skin needs time to heal to make the procedure as effective as possible.
