Encore Medical Rejuvenation specializes in a variety of permanent makeup cosmetic procedures, including permanent eyeliner, also known as eyeliner micro-pigmentation. Permanent eyeliner is a subtle way to allow your eyes to stand out without the need for the daily application of makeup. For most, eyeliner is a staple and is used even on days when other makeup is not. It makes the eye appear larger and more awake. Unfortunately, correctly applying liquid eyeliner takes time. In fact, regardless of the type, traditional eyeliner can get into the eye and is difficult to apply evenly.

There is another option if you are fed up with liquid eyeliner, smearing as you apply, or not going on correctly. Although it sounds painful and dangerous, getting an eyeliner tattoo is neither, as the process has come a long way throughout the years. When done by a professional, the permanent eyeliner procedure is generally pain-free and the healing process is quick. Style options are available, and it is important to meet with your technician to plan the look you prefer.

Why Permanent Eyeliner is Beneficial

Eyeliner is a cosmetic product found in almost every makeup bag. For most, eyeliner is a daily wear makeup product, but have you ever considered what it’s made of or if it can cause side effects within your body? Most eyeliners are made of a variety of ingredients. EWG Skin Deep has created an online database that ranks the toxicity of many products, including eyeliners. They rank each product based on four ingredient concerns:

  • Cancer risk
  • Developmental & Reproductive Toxicity
  • Allergies & Immunotoxicity
  • Use Restrictions

You can spend your time researching which product is the best when it comes to eyeliner, or you can stop using it altogether and invest in getting a permanent eyeliner tattoo. Not only will this save you time each day, but it will completely eliminate the risk of any ingredients found in the eyeliner itself.

What to Expect During Your Eyeliner Tattoo Appointment

Prior to the actual tattoo, you will meet with your technician to discuss color options and permanent eyeliner styles. The ink can be a thin and very natural line or can be thicker or even winged, always following the lash line. The pre tattoo meeting is very important as it gives the technician a good idea of your style type and preferences. If you have an image of what you would like to have done, bring it with you. Our technicians can use your photos to help get you exactly what you want.

On the day of your permanent makeup appointment, you will have a numbing cream applied to your eyes. Once the eyelids are numb, the tattooing will begin. Patients can expect to hear buzzing and feel a vibration but have very little to no pain associated with the tattooing itself. Like a regular body tattoo, healing will need to occur, so you should avoid makeup for the amount of time recommended by the technician.

How Long Does Permanent Eyeliner Last?

Although permanent eyeliner is labeled as permanent, like any tattoo, it will fade over time. Initially, eyeliner tattoos are dark and shiny. After about three weeks, they fade to their actual, less dramatic color and lose their shine. Depending on the individual, permanent eyeliner will need to be touched up every 2-5 years. Some bodies hold the ink well and last beautifully with only slight fading for the entire five years, while others will need a touch-up after 2-3 years.

The good news is that the fading allows for updating the tattoo to meet new styles. It is a permanent procedure, so it will never completely fade from view, but without touch-ups, over time, it will become less and less noticeable.

Permanent Eyeliner Aftercare Instructions

Once your eyeliner tattoos are done, you will leave with a set of aftercare instructions. Here are some main points from those instructions to keep your tattooed eyeliner looking its best:

  1. Do not wear makeup until healing is complete- a minimum of 10-12 days.
  2. Avoid direct exposure to UV rays for at least 3-4 weeks.
  3. Do not pick at the slight scabbing as this can remove color and potentially cause scarring.
  4. Do not use any lotions or facial products on the eyes for at least ten days.
  5. Avoid sleeping on your face if possible.
  6. Do not sweat into the eyes for at least ten days.
  7. Avoid crying and strenuous activity for at least ten days post-procedure
  8. Call the office with any questions or concerns.

A list of permanent eyeliner aftercare instructions will be provided to you before leaving on the day of your tattoo.

Encore Medi Rejuvenation is a beautiful and welcoming Medi spa. The front staff are incredibly lovely and very helpful. I have been getting Hydrafacials with Jara for the past several months and I am so pleased with the results. I am a monthly visitor and have also done microblading with Jara. She is very sweet and very thorough with both the Hydrafacial and microblading. I haven't tried the other services but am looking forward to trying them the future. Highly recommend this Medi spa!

Who is a Good Candidate for a Permanent Eyeliner Treatment?

Like any tattoo, getting a permanent eyeliner tattoo is recommended for anyone who is healthy and well enough for a tattoo. Eyeliner tattoos do cause punctures to the dermis of the eyelid, so people with bleeding conditions or autoimmune disorders may not be good candidates. If you have recently had Botox or similar injections to the face, you may need to wait for a bit before the tattoo is done. You do not need to have eyelashes for this procedure to be successful, so for those with alopecia, you are still a candidate for the procedure. Last, getting an eyeliner tattoo is not recommended for those on blood-thinning medication. Allergic reactions are rare, but we may need to consider alternative procedures for anyone with extremely sensitive skin.

Be sure you are open about any medical conditions of which you believe we may need to be aware.

If you feel that permanent makeup is right for you, then you should also consider lip blushing as well. Contact our team to schedule a consultation today.
